Berlin – Comme des Garçons has commissioned contemporary art studio Zeitguised to re-interpret the spring/summer 2014 collection by Rei Kawakubo as abstract organisms.
With a portfolio of 3D animation projects, the Berlin-based studio has made a name for itself creating imagery that blurs the boundaries between biology and technology. Its seductive video sequences recently caught the eye of the creative team at Commes des Garçons, which invited Zeitguised to translate the visual themes of the spring/summer 2014 collection into a motion triptych.
The brief was to re-imagine the aesthetic concepts as abstract organisms, rather than a clothing range, resulting in a tantalising video featuring forms and textures inspired equally by microbiology and technology, both abstract and strikingly recognisable. ‘Everything in realism and abstraction seems to have been said, and we felt that there is still a vivid and vibrant middle – a huge area that can still be explored,’ explains Henrik Mauler from Zeitguised.
The aesthetic of the final piece, Comme des Organismes, reminds us of the visual interplay between nature and technology identified in the Fauna Fetish design direction.
