100 Years by John Malkovich for Louis XIII Cognac, Los Angeles

Los Angeles – Louis XIII Cognac has commissioned a film starring John Malkovich that won’t be released for 100 years.

  • Film designed to show how Louis XIII cellar masters create bottles of cognac that won’t be tasted in their lifetimes
  • Tickets for the 2115 film premiere will go to descendants of viewers who received a ticket to the 2015 preview

French liquor brand Louis XIII Cognac has made a short film scripted and starring John Malkovich. Unusually, however, it won’t be viewable by the public for 100 years.

At a launch party in Los Angeles, Malkovich locked the finished film in a safe bearing a timer that counts down the seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years until 2115, when it will be released. The safe is now in Hollywood but will tour the world before arriving in its final destination, Cognac, where the liquor company is based.

New York agency Fred & Farid conceptualised the project and brought director Robert Rodriguez on board from Moonwalk Films. The screenplay portrays three versions of a future. In the first, Earth has been overtaken by nature, in the second it is ruled by technology, and in the third humanoid robots have taken control.

The Big Picture

In The Age of the Long Near companies are starting to realise the power of The Immortal Brand to inspire people and win customer trust. As we spell out in Cathedral Challenges, brands are moving away from focusing on heritage towards legacy.
