Silent movie: Rurbans create pop-up cinema

London – A pop-up cinema is the latest in a series of Rurban community efforts in Deptford, south London.

For three weekends in September, The Deptford Project, a local regeneration initiative, will host nightly film shows in collaboration with organisers Silent Cinema.

The Deptford Project’s creatives-in-residence will band together to create a location-specific experience. Artists Jamie Elliot and Liam Healy of Jail Make and furniture designers Boro have designed wooden-pallet armchairs specially for the cinema, and members of the Crafty Bitches collective are hand-sewing seat cushions from recycled fabrics. The Deptford Project Café in a converted train carriage will provide snacks made with fresh ingredients grown on site.

Like the Brixton Cornercopia with its community-focused appeal, this is one project that is ready for its close-up.
