United States – Targeting the emerging austere luxury consumer, Barclays Bank has launched the Visa Black Card, whose membership is restricted to 1% of the US population. The minimalist card itself is made with carbon graphite – another example of how high-end companies and services are responding to the sober consumer mood by producing pared-down luxury offerings, in a trend we’re calling Rough Luxe.
Although less exclusive than its competitors – such as the invitation-only American Express Centurion Card – the Black Card nevertheless offers a host of desirable cardmember services, including a 24-hour concierge service, luxury gifts and priority access to airport lounges.
