New York – Ralph Lauren’s autumn/winter 2012/2013 collection was inspired by TV series Downton Abbey, and focused on an androgynous look. Models appeared dapper in three-piece suits in plaid, checks and tweed, which were given a lavish finish with silk handkerchiefs tucked into breast pockets. Regal jewellery, pheasant feathers and an opulent gold finish gave the collection a British aristocratic glamour.
The second season of Downton Abbey premiered in the US with 4.2m viewers. The show has heavily influenced menswear and womenswear for autumn/winter 2012, first with Burberry’s Prorsum autumn/winter 2012 English country gentlemen-inspired menswear collection and then L’Wren Scott’s Tea Time collection, referencing England from the 1900s to World War II.
The collection is an example of our Revivalism trend, and is also the first time since TV show Mad Men that a pop culture phenomenon has had such an impact on fashion.
