London – Making use of the abundance of edible nature on our doorsteps, a new project by Royal College of Art graduate Vahakn Matossian helps urban dwellers to seek out local fruit trees.
Fruit City, currently on display as part of the RCA’s annual graduate summer exhibition, maps out locations where Londoners can find, for instance, fig, pear or apple trees. The website also includes recipe suggestions for food and drink using local produce, and serves as a community network where users can add trees to the growing map. The project, Matossian says, encourages us to view our streets as a place for ‘vibrant living and sweet communication’. He has also designed, as part of the project, a collection of ‘picking tools’ tailored to the urban gatherer.
SHOW RCA 2009 runs till 5 July. If you’re in London, we definitely recommend a visit. Otherwise, look out for our top 10 highlights early next week.
