Zaanstad, the Netherlands – A pixellated set of images is brightening the commute of cyclists in Holland. The concept, commissioned by Zaanstad City Council and designed by Dutch creatives Overtreders W, Maartje Dros and Eric Klarenbeek, features visuals suggested by local residents.
The residents of Zaanstad, just north of Amsterdam, were asked to submit visual ideas of what they were most proud of in their city. A website was created to allow budding artists to create a pixel drawing and submit it for consideration. The best images, chosen from a pool of more than 800 entries, were then turned into a multicoloured mosaic mural in a previously grey, industrial part of town.
The initiative is a fantastic example of what can happen when you harness the creativity of the crowd.
