US – Burger King has called on McDonald’s to join forces for this year’s International Day of Peace.
- Burger King posted ads in The New York Times and The Chicago Tribune calling for a one-day collaboration
- Under the proposed terms of the cooperation Burger King and McDonald’s would run a pop-up together selling a McWhopper
Burger King approached its fast food rival and suggested the two companies operate a joint venture for one day only, with all the proceeds going to non-profit-making Peace One Day, which is raising awareness for the International Day of Peace on 21 September.
The pop-up, proposed for a site in Atlanta, would sell the McWhopper, a combination of the McDonald’s best-selling Big Mac and Burger King’s iconic Whopper.
But McDonald’s quickly rebuffed the idea, with CEO Steve Eastbrook taking to Twitter to say that although the sentiment is to be admired the two companies could pool their collective influence to do ‘something to make a real difference’.
The Big Picture: While Burger King and McDonald’s might be friendly competitors, according to Eastbrook, don’t expect any camaraderie between McDonald’s and rival Taco Bell, whose war over breakfast rages on.
