UK – An art project hosted on billboards across the UK examines the meaning of identity.
- The project is a collaboration between artist Martin Firrell and outdoor advertisers PrimeSight, Outdoor Plus and Clear Channel
- All Identity Is Constructed comprises videos of a gay black man, an albino woman and a transgender woman
Firrell worked with three participants, Rose, Tyler and Michelle, to understand how each person views themselves and how they are perceived by others. Each person discusses how they view themselves and what that means for their identity.
Firrell hopes that the project will foster greater identity equality, and help people to understand that identity is a construct, and as such, each person’s identity is theirs to make and remake. ‘All of my work as a public artist is aimed at prompting public conversations of social value,’ Firrell said in a statement.
‘With All Identity Is Constructed, I wanted to bring messages about tolerance into public spaces up and down the country where they could make life fairer and easier for people who make unusual identity choices.’
The Big Picture
Firrell’s project chimes with Neutral Culture, where consumers are accepting that identity is a nuanced, personal and fluid concept.
