London – Last night Thomas Heatherwick won the London Design Medal in recognition for his contribution to design in the capital.
The award was handed to Heatherwick at the Andaz Hotel after a string of designs this year such as the outstanding British Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo and the new London route master bus.
‘It’s a huge honour and a great surprise to be given the London Design Medal,’ said Heatherwick. ‘London is the city I was born and brought up in – an endlessly exciting mish-mash of a place that inspires me and my team in the projects we do.’
A part of the London Design Festival, the medal is awarded each year to a key British contributor to design. This year’s medal was decided by a panel which included names such as The Future Laboratory director Chris Sanderson, design critic Alice Rawsthorn and Wallpaper* editor Tony Chambers.
