London – An Urban Physic Garden is opening on a previously derelict site in south London for two months this summer.
The project was organised by Wayward Plants, who were behind last year’s Union Street Urban Orchard. The team has enlisted a group of volunteers to plant medicinal plants and herbs. The project will include a number of on-site talks, workshops, film screenings and events.
The medicinal garden is designed to reflect the medical history of the surrounding area, which includes the Old Operating Theatre and St. Thomas’ and Guy’s Hospitals. A decommissioned ambulance will act as a kitchen for pop-up supper club Rambling Restaurant.
As LS:N Global noted in our Rurban Revolution macro trend, city dwellers are reconnecting with their communities through such events, and are creating pockets of rural life in urban surroundings.
