Houston, Texas – Rather than building a new hotel on the coast, Morris Architects is taking to the seas with its new resort concept. The firm’s audacious plan will transform a disused oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico into a luxury eco-resort and spa.
The Rig Resort draws its power from sources of renewable energy – the wind, the waves and the sun – giving it near-complete autonomy miles from shore. The hotel also makes use of its position on water by using light reflected from the ocean to illuminate the interior space, while a core of water stabilises the platform during stormy weather conditions.
