Lost in discovery: App takes walkers to task

International – Ever wanted to get lost in your own neighbourhood? Non-profit-making organisation Broken City Lab and artist Justin Langlois have collaborated to create a new walk route-finding app.

Rather than simply telling iPhone users to turn left at the next junction to reach their destination, Drift displays a series of tasks to complete, such as ‘walk south and find something unusual to take a photograph of’. When a user takes a picture, the app geo-tags the image and uploads it to the Drift website, where people can view each other’s journeys.

The random instructions and sense of play that the app provides encourages iPhone users to discover new things in their area. As people interact with the app, they can increase the complexity of the instructions and uncover unique local objects and sights.
