Mobile Brandalism: Nokia sneaks attack at Apple

#6438 / 0

Nokia, Finland – In this tumultuous era of economic hardship, some brands are finding new ways to promote their points of difference – even attacking their rivals’ pitfalls in creative ways to attract publicity.

Enter Nokia’s latest act of Brandalism, a new viral video poking fun at the iPhone 5 for its lack of colour choices. The iPhone 5, like all iPhones, only comes in black and white, whereas Nokia’s new Lumia 920 comes in five colours. The video points this out with a playful animated sequence, pitched to be both witty and relatively subtle – almost like an in-joke to iPhone users. The iPhone is not mentioned directly.

Brandalism is just one way that brands are operating differently in this era of thrift and necessity. This shift will be explored in LS:N Global’s forthcoming Symbiotic Branding macrotrend. For more, book a last-minute ticket to next week’s Trend Briefing.
