London – During our Re-enlightenment Design Network Evening, held at The Future Laboratory HQ last week, LS:N Global visual editor Joanna Tulej interviewed Dutch designer Els Woldhek and Bulgarian designer Georgi Manassiev about their new design studio Odd Matter.
Woldhek and Manassiev revealed how their collaboration had led to a fruitful artistic partnership. ‘It was exciting to realise how much we had to learn from each other,’ said Manassiev.
The duo showed a pendant lamp from their lighting collection OverNight, which is made from stained glass fused together with copper plating. ‘It makes all these beautiful, weird textures,’ said Woldhek of the organic manufacturing process, which involves growing the copper overnight by suspending the lamp in a tank of acid and adding electricity. ‘It’s a strange process, and we don’t completely control it, but it does the job really well,’ said Woldhek.
