Eindhoven, Netherlands – A new food preservation system utilises traditional food preservation techniques. Ryou Ji Hyun, a graduate of Design Academy Eindhoven, has designed simple storage devices that educate the user while saving on energy costs: a definite lure for increasingly eco-conscious consumers (see our Homestead 3.0 trend). The food preservation project includes a storage unit that uses the natural gas emitted by apples to preserve potatoes that lie beneath.
‘We hand over responsibility for taking care of food to technology. My design looks at reintroducing a traditional oral knowledge of food,’ says Ji Hyun. A fridgeless kitchen may not be far in the future.
