St Petersburg, Florida – The Dalí Museum has launched a new virtual reality (VR) exhibit that takes visitors inside the work of the great surrealist painter.

  • Dreams of Dalí uses Oculus Rift technology to enable visitors to explore a digital landscape created from the artist’s work
  • Through the technology viewers can see aspects of the work from a new perspective

For the exhibition Disney and Dalí: Architects of the Imagination, the museum teamed up with agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners to create Dreams of Dalí, a VR experience that adds another layer of depth to the artist’s work.

While looking for the perfect piece to turn into a VR experience, Goodby Silverstein & Partners creative directors Sam Luchini and Roger Baran came across Archeological Reminiscence of Millet’s Angelus, Dali’s masterpiece from the 1930s.

‘We knew that was it,’ says Baran. ‘We imagined what it would be like to be a small ant looking up at these enormous towers.’

After researching into the artist’s mythology, the team was able to build a better picture of the world he had created, what the towers would look like from the back or details of the two figures in the foreground when seen from up close.

The Big Picture

Experiences designed to attract Generation I and Millennials are bringing interaction, technology and virtual reality to the forefront of the museum experience.
