Fashion unfolding: Issey Miyake creases up

Tokyo – The art of origami and folding has always been an inspiration for Japanese designer Issey Miyake, and this season is no exception. The 132 5 collection comprises 10 geometric pieces of recycled PET polyester that each unfolds to reveal a futuristic, angular dress.

The designer worked with computer scientist Jun Mitani on his computer modelling program to design the garments, initially in paper to add cuts and folds in the appropriate places, allowing the clothes to fold completely flat with a variety of scales and combinations.

LS:N Global has previously explored how scientists and designers are teaming up to create alternative fashion. For more read our Inform article with designer Suzanne Lee.
