London – Literature is about to take the next step in its digital evolution thanks to publisher Visual Editions.

  • New platform dedicated to advancing the digital book concept
  • Literature is enjoying a resurgence, buoyed by a new generation of younger readers

After millennia of stagnation the experience of reading has undergone rapid innovation in the digital age. E-books and transmedia platforms have gone some way to elevating the experience and now there is a platform dedicated to the cause. Together with agency Universal Everything and Google’s Creative Lab, Visual Editions has created Editions at Play, a space for literature that couldn’t possibly live in print.

‘We like the idea of books that mutate or disappear, that change depending on readers’ circumstances or location, or books that let you uncover material through different kinds of challenges,’ say the publishers.

To date, all that has been revealed is the site’s logo, a simple template that can be brought to life through digital wizardry featuring more than 20 variations, with more to follow. ‘It’s taking a background in grid-based print design and mixing it with today’s digital possibilities for responsive imagery. As a publisher it’s about a respect for print and craftsmanship and a future vision of the freedom that digital brings,’ Gregory Povey, producer at Universal Everything, tells LS:N Global.

The Big Picture: The logo is reminiscent of our Shape-shifting design direction, which explores generative design’s movement towards a more poetic style, while The Echo Project offers another compelling example of digital storytelling at its finest.
