London – Have terms such as ‘craft’ and ‘artisanal’ lost their meaning? We find out more with some of the country’s finest craftspeople.
Along with master carpenters Benchmark, designer James Shaw, ceramic designers 1882 Ltd, and pioneers of hand-made high-tech Silo Studio we uncover what craft has come to mean in the modern age.
'Craft is word that continually gets thrown around these days,' says designer Max Lamb, founder of Max Lamb studio. 'We see it being brandished over companies and products that you wouldn't normally assume would be a craft object.'
The Big Picture: Join us on Wednesday 23 September for Can Craft be Synthetic? where we will be joined by Riya Patel, curator at The Aram Gallery; Carole Collet, professor in design for sustainable futures at Central Saint Martins; and Grant Gibson, editor of Crafts magazine.
