Germany – Adidas has launched Futurecraft, a custom performance trainer that features 3D-printed soles.
- 3D printing is increasingly used in relevant commercial applications
- Advanced technology will redefine the sportswear category
An in-store treadmill assesses customers’ walking patterns and foot shape, and uses this data to 3D print a bespoke trainer according to their individual needs.
A collaboration with 3D print specialists Materialise, the Futurecraft series will introduce a variety of design innovations over the next six months.
According to Paul Gaudio, creative director at Adidas, the project is about ‘marrying the qualities of handcrafting and prototyping with the limitless potential of new manufacturing technologies. It is stripped-back, fast, raw and real, like our approach to design.’
The Big Picture: Technological innovations are powering The Optimised Self movement. To explain their impact on craft, LS:N Global editor Jonathan Openshaw outlines the key ideas from his book Postdigital Artisans.
