London – Thomas Gorton, editor of Dazed Digital, spoke to LS:N Global about driving youth culture online.

‘Identity at its core is what teenagers are interested in – the idea that they control who they are, their bodies and what they say,’ Gorton told LS:N Global senior journalist Daniela Walker.

Highly politicised and visual-first, teenagers respond positively to vibrant-rich media. Dazed Digital also posts directly to Instagram and Facebook, and understands that social networks are now as important as traditional distribution methods.

‘More than ever, youth dominates media,’ said Gorton. ‘The way I look at mainstream media now is an ever growing graveyard of older people who don’t understand the way that culture works.’

The Big Picture

The demographic LS:N Global calls Gen Viz has its routes in visual-first youth culture, where digital natives communicate through symbols and live streams over text.
