London – Climate change and energy reserves are driving self-sufficiency and the way in which we source produce and make life’s necessities. To illustrate the point, Kieren Jones, a student at the Royal College of Art, has developed the Community Commerce concept.

In return for a regular supply of eggs and the odd chicken he constructed a chicken coup for his neighbour. The raw materials were then used for his miniature factory where he constructed a ‘chicken bone china egg cup’, a ‘salt spoon’ and a ‘chicken leather flight jacket’.

‘Perhaps we will see the emergence of personal micro-farms, new cottage industries and factories in our local communities,’ says Jones.

As LS:N Global explores in our Rurban design trend, as more and more people look to rural ways, the urban landscape is increasingly taking inspiration from a more sustainable way of life and reworking the rules of urban living.
