Seeing the light: Toronto art shines through

Toronto – Digital design collective United Visual Artists (UVA) has turned public space in Toronto into a responsive light show that mimics the light of a forest.

Canopy, a 90-metre long light installation spans the front façade of the Maple Leaf Square complex, and is inspired by the light that appears when walking through a forest. To capture the light, Canopy uses thousands of identical modules that resemble leaves and the cells within them. Similarly, Connection, another light installation, is integrated into a pedestrian bridge and responds when people walk under it.

The public artwork is yet another example of how UVA involves passers-by in its work, creating a live experience. For more on how the digital medium is increasingly reaching into the real world, read our Responsive Architecture Micro Trend.
