Eindhoven – Dutch designers OS and OOS have built Syzygy, a light inspired by the movement of celestial bodies.
A syzygy is an astronomical event in which three celestial bodies move into a straight-line configuration. Eclipses, for example, occur as a result of a syzygy between the sun, the moon and the earth.
Designers Sophie Mensen and Oskar Peet wanted to create a light that mimicked such movements with a constant light source intermittently covered by discs.
‘This physical blocking of the light was an important aspect in our concept,’ the designers say. ‘Three different lights demonstrate the three different aspects of a syzygy; transit, occultation and eclipse.’
Ideal for a space for quiet contemplation and attuned to natural processes, the light is a great example of design for a New Sublimity lifestyle.
